Tryfan is our special ale for August and is the penultimate beer in the summer 'Mountain Range'. At 4.8% abv Tryfan is a strong yet refreshing golden bitter with the distinctive bitterness of New Zealand's Green Bullet hops and a satisfying full flavour. Tryfan is now on sale in pubs across North Wales. 14/08/07 GLASLYN WINS GOLD AWARD FOR PORTHMADOG'S PURPLE MOOSE BREWERY
The Purple Moose Brewery from Porthmadog has picked up its most prestigious award to date. The brewery's popular 4.2% golden best bitter, Cwrw Glaslyn / Glaslyn Ale attained the Gold award in the Best Bitters category at the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Champion Beer of Britain competition 2007. The competition is held annually as part of CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival (GBBF), which is now in its 30th year. The festival is the largest of its kind and this year hosted around 450 real ales from across Great Britain at Earls Court, London. This year the Purple Moose Brewery was proud to be a part of the first ever all-Welsh bar at the GBBF. Both Cwrw Glaslyn and Cwrw Madog / Madog's Ale were to be found on the bar alongside nearly 30 other top Welsh beers. Cwrw Madog was also judged in the bitters category of the competition. The Champion Beer of Britain competition is the culmination of regional CAMRA competitions and recommendations from CAMRA tasting panels and is the highest profile competition in the country. Over 50 different ales are judged across eight categories with the winner in each category going forward for the Supreme Champion award. This year the top accolade went to Hobsons Mild. Although the Purple Moose Brewery has only been brewing for just over two years it is proud to have had three out of its four regular beers judged in two national finals in the same year. Cwrw Eryri / Snowdonia Ale reached the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) national final in March 2007. Meanwhile, the brewery's fourth regular beer, Ochr Tywyll y Mŵs / Dark Side of the Moose has not been overlooked as it has won "Beer of the Festival" at both the Leeds and Cambridge CAMRA beer festivals. This has already been a fantastic second full year of business for the brewery with more competitions to come before the end of the year. The number of awards already attained are proof of the high quality of the beer that the brewery produces and the standard to which it aspires. 13/08/07 WORKING TOGETHER The Ffestiniog Railway Company in Porthmadog works very closely with Purple Moose Brewery and has been an active supporter since its conception in 2005- working hard to advertise the company at shows, events and in publicity material. Spooner’s pub at Harbour Station regularly has several Purple Moose ales on tap and the company sells bottled ales on their buffet cars and at other stations along the popular line. In fact, it was the desire to be able to sell the beers on the trains that lead to bottling at a very early stage, and is now a significant part of the business. Purple Moose regularly brews signature ales for the Railway’s shows and special events and last year’s Snowdonia Ale, which was specifically brewed as the festival bitter for the Welsh Highland Railway (Caernarfon)’s Rail Ale Festival, Cwrw ar y Cledrau, went on to win several awards… …and this working relationship is growing stronger by the cask. Purple Moose has just won the CAMRA Best Bitters Gold Award in the 2007 Champion Beer of Britain competition with Glaslyn Ale, and Spooner’s has just been voted the CAMRA local area joint-pub of the year! Spooner’s won this competition outright in 2003, 2005 and 2006- and it can only be a good thing for Porthmadog that locals businesses can work together, and are winning national awards regularly, as it highlights what the area has to offer and the quality of service and product available. Purple Moose is proud to be supplying an award winning pub with award winning ale in the town of Porthmadog and is delighted that the buffet cars and trolleys of the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways are taking the message of the brewery’s success to its many customers.
