NEW BREW TO MARK 200 YEARS OF THE COB

September 2011 marks the bi-centenary of 'Y Cob/The Cob', the mile long causeway which links Porthmadog with the opposite peninsula, across the Glaslyn estuary. Built by William Maddocks The Cob was officially opened on 17th September 1811.

Purple Moose has brewed a special beer to mark the event and this will be available in several pubs in and around Porthmadog during the course of the 200th anniversary celebrations, as well as further afield.

Cob 200 is a rich amber coloured bitter with hints of orange and caramel. It will be launched at Spooner's Bar, Harbour Station, Ffestiniog Railway at 4pm on Friday 9th September.

On Saturday 10th September there will be an all day event in Tremadog square. The Union Inn will be hosting a mini beer festival, with several Purple Moose beers, including Cob 200.

The celebrations culminate on Saturday 17th September with events in Porthmadog, finishing with a grand firework display on The Cob itself.

DARK SIDE GETS A GREAT TASTE GONG

Purple Moose Brewery has scooped one of its most prestigious awards to date – a ‘Golden Fork’ trophy at this year’s Great Taste Awards in London. The trophy for ‘Best Welsh Speciality’ was presented to brewery founder Lawrence Washington at a ceremony on 5th September for Purple Moose’s iconic dark beer, Dark Side of the Moose.

The awards, which have been run by The Guild of Fine Food since 1995, recognise the best speciality food and drink from the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. From this year’s 7,482 entries Dark Side of the Moose was one of just 114 products to achieve the highest standard with a 3-Star Gold. From there it became one of a select few to be nominated for one of the twelve Golden Fork trophies.

Lawrence and his staff are immensely proud of this achievement; one which helps to put beer on the map not only for Wales, but for the whole of the UK. “It is fantastic to see that great British beer is gaining such high levels of recognition, alongside the very best of the nation’s food and drink.”

This award comes on the back of several others already this year for the same beer. Dark Side of the Moose achieved a bronze at the Brewing Industry International Awards in February, and gained a third successive award at the International Beer Challenge.

Lawrence added, “When Purple Moose Brewery began six years ago I designed Dark Side of the Moose to my own taste, for what would hopefully become my favourite beer. I am extremely pleased with the result, and so flattered that many other people clearly enjoy it as well. This is an unbelievable achievement, and it is so reassuring that we are making fantastic beer which is selling at record levels.”

NEW RANGE OF SPECIALITY BEERS ARE HERE

Purple Moose Brewery is introducing two new beers to its range. They are both speciality beers, and one will be available through summer months with the other in the winter.

Ysgawen - Welsh for elderflower - is a refreshing pale ale with, as the name suggests, the addition of elderflowers to give a delectable floral aroma and finish to the beer. This will be available in both cask and bottle from Monday 5th September.

Myrica Gale is a sumptuous stout brewed using Hallertau hops with the added extravagance of Welsh bog myrtle. Myrica Gale is the Latin name for this unusually aromatic hill shrub. This delicious stout will be available in casks and bottles from Monday 3rd October.
